Sweet bird of Mashomack
Jim Colligan got a rare view of one of the most beautiful — and most elusive — birds in our area.
He captured this male scarlet tanager feeding in a mayberry tree in Mashomack.
Tanagers are difficult to see because they prefer to live at the tops of forest canopies.
This stunningly beautiful bird, which lit up the Mashomack woods, will go from scarlet to a greenish body color later this year, before beginning the long trek to winter quarters in South America.
