A Needham’s Skimmer is a rare type of drafgonfly that can be found on Plum Island in the wetlands area.
The existing natural habitat has been the factor most often cited in the fight against a sale of federally-owned Plum Island.
But the specific types of wildlife and plants that thrive on the island have never been fully documented. With that in mind, researchers from the New York Natural Heritage Program (NYNHP) spent the last year recording all the living species on the island, where the existing federal animal disease research center is expected to close in the coming years. A home delivery service will be created for patients as part of New York’s expanded medical marijuana program, according to an announcement by the state Department of Health.
