With the kickoff of the Shelter Island Bucks 2014 campaign Sunday at Fiske Field, another Island mystery has come to light.

The true, beneath-the-antlers and above-the-hooves identity of Billy Buck, the team’s mascot, is unclear, according to Bucks General Manager Dave Gurney.

Or else he just wasn’t saying. Was it kind of like not outing the guy who plays Santa Claus, so kids can still dream there really is a jolly old elf? (more…)

The smell of honey flows through Mike Loriz’s garage.

Which stands to reason, since Mr. Loriz looks after four colonies of buzzing honeybees at Sylvester Manor. In his garage, he houses bee feeders left with the syrupy nectar that keeps hives humming. (more…)

Michael Arnone will be back for a second tour of duty on the streets of Shelter Island.

Once again Michael Arnone will be on the streets of Shelter Island.

Mr. Arnone, 21, who was a traffic control officer for the police department last summer, will have the same duties this year. (more…)

It started five years ago.

The New York State Board of Regents had reached a milestone: there was a proposal before them on declaring cheerleading an interscholastic sport. Although it gained the support of many organizations right off the bat, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, it took years to get a final unanimous vote — 17-0 — from the Regents last month.
