A plunge into the frigid waters of the bay in support of the public library has become a Thanksgiving weekend tradition here. The 8th annual Turkey Plunge is Saturday, November 25 at 11 a.m. sharp at Crescent Beach and costumes are highly encouraged.
‘Pale Male: A Pilgrimage’ by Roz Dimon
The work of artist Roz Dimon, a Shelter Island resident, goes on view this weekend in “Hybrid,” an exhibition at Alex Ferrone Gallery on the North Fork. Also included in the exhibit is work by Colin Goldberg and Han Qin and each artist in the show combines digital technology with various artistic disciplines — including painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking. To the busy and the practical, Shelter Island ferries are utilitarian crafts of steel. Artist and Shelter Island resident Christine Matthäi sees the ferry as her passage to a refuge, a place where she can do work that expresses her hard-won calmness and understanding.
“When you come rushed and you want to go on the ferry, sometimes there is no ferry. You have to sit there, take a deep breath, and wait for the cradle to come,” she said. “And then it cradles you back home.” (more…)
