In early April, the New York Press Association awarded Ms. Walz an honorable mention in the category of Feature Photography for this iconic image of three girls doing handstands on a picnic table at Crescent Beach. The judges summed up her photograph simply and perfectly: ‘Pure joy!’

With a three-month long school break on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to look into summer fun for the kids. Shelter Island Recreation youth summer programs are now open for registration.

Shelter Island School students performed ‘The Addams Family’ on April 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Shelter Island School students in 8th through 12th grade presented “The Addams Family” musical last weekend under the direction of John and Anu Kaasik. The talented actors and actresses sang music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa under the direction of musical directors Deanna Locascio and Keith Brace.

The Shelter Island Library’s Friday Night Dialogues on April 20 will feature Mollie Fennell Numark who will discuss her thrilling journey from war torn Britain to the New York City stage. Moderated by Shelter Island’s own Gary Paul Gates, this fascinating story of Ms. Numark’s life focuses on her early years as a dancer in Britain during the war and follows her as she moves to the United States.  (more…)

One of the primal experiences — and joys — for New Yorkers is going to a Broadway play.

Of course the feelings drummed up by seeing actors embody characters invented by playwrights and authors can be just as moving in a play on Shelter Island. Broadway offers considerably more technical bells and whistles and the acting talent is a bit deeper. (more…)
