The Shelter Island Historical Society presented Santa’s Workshop in the Barn on Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Shelter Island History Center.

The title of this memoir reflects the very difficult experiences that Julie Andrews, stage and screen star, repeatedly faced in trying to create a stable home for her family. She seemed from afar to have a magical existence, being tapped for leading roles in “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music,” as well as a sophisticated drama with James Garner, “The Americanization of Emily.” Those three films were made in the space of a few years in the early 1960s, launching the former vaudevillian into the highest Hollywood echelons.
Okinawan sweet potatoes are one of my favorite foods. Having grown up in Hawaii, there was an abundance of them commonly found on dinner tables, menus and at luaus. But here in New York they’ve made their way onto my Most Wanted but Hard to Find List. (more…)
The PTSA Holiday Boutique is where students shop for family members and volunteers wrap gifts. It is currently accepting donations of new and used items. Especially needed are gifts for dads, grandpas, uncles and brothers. Gift wrapping supplies are also needed. Donations can be dropped off in the Shelter Island School lobby through Tuesday, Dec. 10.
