Last month’s “Down Memory Lane” photo ID contest produced only one winner, Tom Speeches of Ram Island Drive.

Tom called in at 10:56 a.m., Thursday, February 9, the day the photos first appeared in “Island Seniors.” He correctly identified Olive Congdon, Lillian (Babe) Miller and Clarissa Fields in picture #1; Lilly Janick in picture #2 and Edith Daniels in picture #3.

There were two other contest entrants: Dorothy Bloom who called at 2:45 p.m. and Jeanne Woods who called at 6:29 p.m., both on February 9. Dorothy correctly  identified three of the five seniors in the photos; Jeanne managed to name only one.

This is the fourth “Down Memory Lane” photo  contest to appear in “Island Seniors.” The pictures are from the Nutrition Program’s Congregate Meal, now the Dinner Bell, and date back to 1998.

It is important, I believe, to remember old friends and neighbors. And you, dear reader, appear to share this sentiment.

A note of thanks to Tom, Dorothy and Jeanne for taking the time to participate in the contest.

February is as good a month as any for remembering old friends.

Join me in what will be the fourth and final trip “Down Memory Lane,” the photo contest that challenges you to identify five of the seniors in the three pictures shown here.

The contest rules are simple:

1. Call me at 749-0751.

2. Be sure to leave your name and the date and time of your call.

3. Name the seniors by picture number.

The first contestant to call with the correct identifications is the winner. In the event of a tie, separate prizes will be awarded. The call-in deadline is Friday, February 17 at noon. The winner(s) will be announced in the February 23 issue of your Reporter.

In picture #1, all three women need identification. The one on the right was a lighthouse keeper’s daughter. The other two still have children on the Island.

In picture #2, this petite diner is celebrating her birthday at a Monday Collegiate Meal (now the Dinner Bell). Hint: She lived in a doll’s house on Smith Street. Who is she?

In picture #3, sharing a lunch with the one and only Lillian Stile (left) is a retired school nurse and, at that time, a member of the Senior Citizens Affairs Council. Who is she?

Memory Lane photo #1

Last month’s “Down Memory Lane” photo ID contest produced two winners: Jeanne Woods of Robin Lane and Carol Tiernan of Burro Hall Lane.

Jeanne called in at 3:10 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, correctly identifying Louis and Edie Stark in picture #1 and Phil and Pat Reilly and Charlie Williams in picture #2.

Carol called at 4:39 p.m. on Friday, November 11. Not only did she correctly identify all five seniors in the two pictures, she also named the gentleman with the rose — Dick Savage — seated next to  Louis Stark in picture #1.

The contest judge (me) ruled that by giving us Mr. Savage’s name she, too, should be a winner even though she called in a day later than Jeanne.

There were two other contest entrants: John Evans, a Heights resident, checked in with the correct identifications at 12:48 p.m. on Sunday, November 13 and Marion Reilly, Pat’s daughter, who called in on the afternoon of Monday, November 14.

This is  the third “Down Memory Lane” photo ID contest to appear in “Island Seniors.” The photos are from the Nutrition Program’s congregate meal and date back to 1998.

I have enough pictures left from the old collection to run one more contest, perhaps in February. It is important, I believe, to remember old friends and neighbors.

As Marion Reilly said in her phone message, “It was great to see my Dad and Mom and Charlie Williams with Virginia Hanrahan … great to go down that memory lane.”

A note of thanks to Jeanne Woods, Carol Tiernan, John Evans and Marion Reilly for taking the time to participate in the contest.

Join us for another trip “Down Memory Lane.” In this photo identification contest, try to name all five seniors in the two photos below. The pictures are from the old Nutrition Program’s Congregate Meal and date back to 1998.

Attendance at the luncheons was low, and in an effort to boost the numbers, a special invitation went out to Heights residents. (That’s a clue!)

In picture # 1, the handsome couple on the right obviously enjoyed having their picture taken. Who are they? The name of the gentleman on the left is, alas, unknown to me.

Photos 2.

In picture #2, a happy foursome has just finished dessert. The pretty woman on the left is Virginia Hanrahan, better known as a volunteer at the Mashomack Preserve’s Visitor Center. Who are the other three?

Do call me at 749-0751 with your answers. The time and date of your call will be carefully recorded. “Down Memory Lane” contest winners will be announced in the November 24 issue of your Reporter.
