“The Go-Between” is Joseph Losey’s beguiling film from 1971. One thinks of David Lean as the master of this genre but this movie is as lush and beautiful as any Lean film. Based on the novel by L.P. Hartley, it tells of a boy who becomes the messenger for love notes between an aristocratic young woman and a local farmer. The script is by Harold Pinter and the narration in flash-backs is by the now-grown Michael Redgrave. (more…)

‘The Commitments’ will be shown Tuesday, March 15 at 7p.m. at the library.
“The Commitments,” a 1991 Irish movie based on the novel by Roddy Doyle and directed by Alan Parker, will be shown Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. in the Movies at the Library series on the lower level of the library.
Well, this is an Irish movie, so it must have beautiful bucolic scenery, ingratiating characters speaking with soft lilting brogues and colorful dialogue that verges on the poetic.

Mel Mendelssohn, a significant contributor to the cultural life of Shelter Island, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 2, 2015.
Mel, a resident for over 20 years, had been a professional fundraiser for colleges and charities, and he used this talent as a leader in raising funds for the creation of the Island Fitness Center. (more…)
