Vigorous exercise is a good excuse for eating well, so the Shelter Island 10K is a highlight of my summer. My husband started training for and running the 10K in 1992. At the time, I was pregnant with our second child, and my spouse and I were gaining weight at about the same rate. Twenty-five years later, he is still running, this year alongside the son I gave birth to back then.

Because I have tried to operate a motor vehicle on the North Fork during a weekend in October, I fear the pumpkin. The influx of visitors looking for parking generated by pumpkin-picking opportunities combined with the wanton use of pumpkin spices in everything from coffee to dog biscuits (yes, really) are why I see pumpkins as potentially dangerous.

Sweet corn is here, and you know what to do.

The best sweet corn of the season is coming in now.  This is stuff you can eat raw, a practice I observed at Sep’s farm stand when one employee was so overcome by the creamy beauty of the ears she was selling, that she shucked an ear and ate it one-handed, while making change with the other hand.
