The first New Year’s Eve I worked, I got to the garage in the early afternoon and took a seat on the bench in the drivers’ room. The cabbie next to me had two rolls of paper towels and an industrial-size plastic jug of Lysol. When I asked him what they were for he looked at me as if I truly was born yesterday. (more…)

Cannot stand
To the Editor:
Supervisor Dougherty’s catalogue of prejudice (Your Letters,“Warming Up,” May 11), a dissembling attempt to expand and thereby dilute his inappropriate remarks, cannot stand without comment.

I was at that lunch.

The “joke” was a cringe-worthy, racist, sexist story of a gorilla escaping a zoo to rape a white woman who was then disappointed that “he didn’t text afterwards.” (more…)

Respecting views
To the Editor:
I am writing to cancel my loyal subscription to the Reporter. I subscribed to the Reporter 38 years ago for local news, not to see the office of the president and other national offices trashed through words and offensive cartoons. There are plenty of national print and televised organizations that already do that very well. I wish you would concentrate more on local issues which directly affect Islanders. (more…)
