East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell was speaking the other day with satisfaction about the town’s plan to have 100 percent of its electricity come from renewable energy — safe, clean, green power — by 2020. That’s just four years away.

After the East Hampton Town Board in 2014 unanimously adopted a resolution to have all the town’s electricity come from renewable sources, Mr. Cantwell said: “Making the switch to clean energy is just the right thing to do, both for the environment and for keeping more money in the local economy and creating jobs here.”

At East Hampton Town Hall recently he said: “We’re doing it!” (more…)

There were mixed happenings last week for green energy in and out of Suffolk County.

The expected approval by the Long Island Power Authority of what would be the nation’s largest offshore wind energy project, slated to be built in the Atlantic 30 miles southeast of Montauk by the Deepwater Wind company, was suddenly postponed.

Why? Did Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been micro-managing energy policy in New York State — and has been all over the power map in doing so — have a hand in it? (more…)

PSEG, a Newark, New Jersey-based utility, was foisted on Long Island to be the utility on the island by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

His father, Governor Mario Cuomo, had undermined the idea of Long Island having a democratically-run public power entity determining its energy future — a Long Island Power Authority. After LIPA was created in 1985, he cancelled LIPA trustees elections — central to the LIPA vision — and instead directed they be appointed by the governor, the Assembly speaker and Senate majority leader.

Topping things off, in 2013 Andrew Cuomo had LIPA decimated in favor of PSEG. (more…)

Work began last week on the first offshore wind farm in the United States, off Block Island, 37 miles east of Shelter Island.

“It’s a small project but this is a big deal,” said Gordian Raacke, executive director of Renewable Energy Long Island. “Paraphrasing Neil Armstrong, this is one small step for offshore wind power but it could turn out to be a giant leap for America’s energy future.” (more…)
