I spent the Fourth of July soaking up the sun at Shell Beach. It was a glorious day with warm temperatures, clear skies and bright sun. And despite the fact that it was probably the busiest day of the year at that beach, one can always find a relatively private spot at the water’s edge.

I must say that I was pretty surprised to see the front page headline in the June 13 Reporter that said, “Island Dr. rejected by Stony Brook for Med Center.”

Did you know that June is National Safety Month? Well I did not until Senior Center Director Laurie Fanelli gave me lots of literature about what we should do.

As I sat soaking up the sun last week at Shell Beach, I heard some rustling around the wrapping on my sandwich. Some small pooch was trying to have a snack. Before I could complain, the dog’s owner came by and apologized. I rose from my beach chair and noticed that she was camped out some 100 feet from me with two parrots.
