Shelter Island Firefighters kept what could have become a serious blaze in check Tuesday morning after what initially looked like a brush fire turned out to be an electrical fire.

For the second time in less than a week, Shelter Island Firefighters responded to an early morning fire, but this time it was a smaller situation than they had faced assisting at the Sag Harbor blaze last Friday. (more…)

Update: At 3:10 p.m. PSEG reported 18 customers on Shelter Island were without power.

An SUV traveling south on Midway Road just north of Smith Street shortly before 11 a.m. today struck a pole bringing down live electrical wires. The hot wires  kept rescue workers at bay for more than an hour waiting for PSEG to respond and shut down power. (more…)

PSEG-LI workers were hustling on South Ferry Road shortly after 9 a.m. to untangle broken tree limbs from downed wires to repair a major break just north of Heritage Drive.

Power went out in the Center just before noon and was out for almost an hour. PSEG-LI’s outage map showed much of the Island going out then and Public Works Commissioner Jay Card Jr. reported that burned wires were resulting in restoring power. (more…)
