There are some things we just can’t do anything about. It doesn’t matter how much money or possessions we have accumulated, exercises we do or the food we eat or don’t eat, we are still going to get older.
Since I don’t think or feel like a 76-year-old man, I do things like coloring my hair or walking straight to look the age I feel. It really doesn’t matter because I don’t fool anyone. When people honestly guess my age, they are always nauseatingly close. (more…)

In the stifling attic of rough boards, the afternoon sunlight caught etchings of sailing ships on a wooden beam near a narrow window.
You could see a progression in the work, from a suggestion of a ship to finely drawn images of sails and intricate renderings of ropes and riggings. In the airless August heat, just under the roof of Sylvester Manor, the etchings spoke of an indentured boy’s need for expression and freedom. (more…)
The Obama administration’s recent move opening up a vast area of the Atlantic Ocean to our south to oil and gas drilling comes at a curious time.
Right now there’s so much of the stuff being produced in the U.S. that the industry can’t find places to store it. Add to that the fact that gasoline is at the lowest price in years, and the initiative comes despite the impacts along the Gulf of Mexico, still being felt from the massive 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
