Labor Day is game time for short order cook Bennett Karnis and the grill at the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy is his field of play. Speed, accuracy and skill will deliver the melted cheese and hash browns he is famous for.
“I’ve got to lace up, tape up and put my game face on,” he said.
Bennett, who has been cooking breakfast and lunch at the Pharmacy counter since 1994, is at the heart of one of the Island’s best experiences, a meal eaten with casual acquaintances at an L-shaped counter, while seated on a rotating stool. (more…)

The Shelter Island Bucks’ offense came alive in their final regular season home game of the season Wednesday evening with an 8-1 victory over the Montauk Mustangs.
The win improved the Bucks’ record to two games over .500 at19-17 and kept them close for a Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League (HCBL) playoff spot. The Islanders are now tied for third place in the league with the Riverhead Tomcats, trailing the first place North Fork Ospreys by a single game. (more…)

With a chance to move into first place in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League Sunday evening at Fiske Field, the Shelter Island Bucks came up just short of the opportunity. In front of a packed house in their second to last regular season home game of the season, the Bucks fell 3-2 to the Riverhead Tomcats. (more…)

The Shelter Island Bucks did all they could to stage another comeback victory Wednesday evening at Fiske Field, but couldn’t pull it off. With two outs in the ninth, the Bucks had the potential tying run at the plate. But a strikeout ended the game and the visiting Montauk Mustangs walked away with a 5-2 victory. (more…)
