Thanksgiving weekend on Shelter Island, like many American places, provides space for a special time, when people celebrate with their families by either travelling to or hosting loved ones.
This sense of having a place to share happy memories is, if we’re lucky, one of the benefits of the long weekend. But we’re doubly fortunate that many Islanders remember more than just family gatherings from the past, but provide all of us with reminders of the community values of sharing and contributing that make our home better.

The Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund will hold its annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday, November 28 at 1 p.m. at the Shelter Island School gymnasium.
U.S. Army 1st Lt. Joe Theinert made the ultimate sacrifice on June 4, 2010 while serving his country during Operation Enduring Freedom. The inaugural tournament was held in November of that year thanks to the efforts of event co-founders and coordinators Carla Cadzin and Ian Kanarvogel, who were both schoolmates of Joe’s. After a summer of solemn remembrance ceremonies, Carla and Ian wanted to host a celebratory event that would bring together all those who knew Joe best. (more…)

On Saturday, November 7, a group of local veterans and military family members will stand before an audience and share their raw, sometimes funny and often heartbreaking stories of service and sacrifice in the U.S. military.
Called “The Telling Project,” and just in time for Veterans Day, it’s much more than the sum of its seven parts. (more…)
