Saturday, July 29 brought small craft warnings with the wind gusting up to 32 knots around Shelter Island.
On Sunday morning the winds were still blowing around 10 knots. At 2 p.m., kickoff time for the fifth series of Sunfish races this year hosted by the Menantic Yacht Club (MYC), the wind was practically nonexistent — zero to 1 knot. Boats were drifting aimlessly, waiting for the Race Committee to make a decision about racing. Fortunately for those sailors who arrived late, the racing did not begin until almost 3 p.m. due to lack of wind. (more…)

On a cool, blustery morning last week, Melanie Coronetz made two additions to the first causeway on the way to Little Ram Island.
With marsh and bay on either side of the road, Ms. Coronetz placed signs that read: “Watch mowing and driving for turtles” along with a phone number of an animal rescue center to call if one is found injured. (more…)

This 7-year-old diamondback terrapin turtle, held by Karen Testa of Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons, has been in captivity since it was a hatchling. Turtles of this species have been found dead in nearby creeks feeding the Peconic Bay.
Turtles have been dying in significant numbers near some of the creeks leading into Peconic Bay, amounting to an “unprecedented” die-off, according to environmental advocates and state conservation authorities. (more…)
