Julia Labrozzi, who has just started her senior year at the Shelter Island School, is eager to tell me something important about her early school days.
Once upon a time the wide white-striped street crossing in front of the school led to a tiny store, known as Carol’s Luncheonette that was every schoolchild’s delight. Stocked with lollipops and gum, with a refrigerator full of Yoo-hoo chocolate drink and shelves full of knickknacks, magazines, newspapers and toys, it was an after school hangout that figures prominently in the memories of many local people. Seven really is a lucky number, especially for the Shelter Island School’s volleyball program.
With a win at Port Jefferson Tuesday, the varsity team claimed an incredible seventh consecutive undefeated league championship for the Island. But, actually, luck had nothing to do with it. Skill, teamwork and heart carried the Blue and Gray to victory. (more…)

August 24 seems like a long time ago.
That was when Shelter Island Volleyball started practice for the 2015 season. The teams have come a long way in two weeks, Coach Jim Theinert is back in the gym, and now the Shelter Island junior varsity and varsity teams have completed their first league volleyball matches. (more…)

Two weeks before school starts the high school’s athletes have been getting up early and/or staying late to put in some good sweat time, preparing for what looks to be an even stronger fall season than 2014 for the volleyball, cross country and golf teams. (more…)

On April 30 the Shelter Island JV girls softball team traveled to Smithtown Christian, and played their closest game of the season. But close — for these girls — was winning 15-7.
Looking back, however, the win didn’t came as easily as the score would indicate. (more…)
