Every four years the Summer Olympics gives me license to dream.
As I watch swimmer Michael Phelps, shaped like a garden trowel with flippers for feet, win another gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly, I imagine myself slicing through the water like an eel. And when the bouncy, sparkly nymph Simone Biles flies through her floor exercise like Tinkerbell, I think back to my high school gymnastics class, in which I once executed a forward roll on the balance beam flanked by my classmates who pushed me back onto the beam as I rolled heavily off. The recent article on affordable housing (“What Shelter Island’s future can afford,” March 3) was well written and timely.
However, it was rife with speculation and opinion and did not belong on the front page. The article provided little or no data to substantiate the long list of perceived social problems facing our community. (more…)

A modest proposal
To the Editor:
I agree with Mr. Novak’s concern (Your Letters, “Zika and the Island,” February 11) regarding our “friends” from Latin America returning to the Island after going home for the winter.
If the Suffolk County Department of Health Services fails to immediately start testing for Zika, I believe Shelter Island must take the initiative to protect its true residents from this mosquito-borne menace. (more…)
