I have been reflecting on Kal Lewis, a sophomore at Shelter Island High School, who twice this spring ran 4:15 for 1,600 meters and then won the New York State D-2 1,600 meter title.
Kal has taken 24 seconds off the previous school record of 4:39.6 set by Ian Thomson 20 years ago —five years before Kal was born. His 4:15 is the single greatest track run ever by a Shelter Island runner. (more…)

For some, autumn means it’s time to don a sweater and go apple picking. To others, it warns of the approach of a rapid fire holiday season. But to the current 21 members of the Shelter Island School cross country teams and their coaches, Bryan Gallagher and Toby Green, fall ushers in a new season of competition. (more…)

The Shelter Island School varsity boys and girls cross country teams spent a lot of time on the road last week to close out their seasons.
On November 9, the Suffolk County Cross Country Coaches Association honored the top athletes in the county at its annual Awards Ceremony Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Many members of the boys and girls teams as well as their parents attended and dressed up for the occasion. The girls team — juniors Caitlin Binder, Francesca Frasco, Lindsey Gallagher, Isabella Sherman, sophomores Lily Garrison, Justine Karen, freshmen Emma Gallagher, Lauren Gurney, Abigail Kotula and 7th grader Emma Martinez Majdisova — were honored for earning the girls League and County Class D Championship titles.
