It was 38 minutes into the one-hour Quaker meeting before anyone said a word.

Gathered on the grounds of Sylvester Manor, seated on a jumble of rough-hewn logs fashioned into long benches in a wooded glade, there were six at the meeting, seven if you count the small white dog on Shelter Islander Jim Pugh’s lap. (more…)

As the hot August night wore on in the attic of the old house, she decided she couldn’t take it anymore.

It was growing more stifling by the minute and in the claustrophobic space made of rough boards, there was a squeaking sound of scurrying mice somewhere in the dark corners and moving across the floor. (more…)

Donnamarie Barnes unlocked the door of the 18th century house at Sylvester Manor Educational Farm and moved through rooms full of sheeted furniture, aged wallpaper and neat piles of very old books. She addressed the place as if she were visiting an old friend who has been shut-in.

“Hello house!” she said, walking through the rooms, explaining that, “I like to greet the house when I’ve been away for a while.” (more…)

The staff at Sylvester Manor has a big day planned for Saturday, May 17. The Manor and Long Island Reads will co-sponsor a reading and book signing with Mac Griswold, author of “The Manor: Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island,” selected as the best book for 2014 by Long Island Reads, a joint committee of library professionals from Nassau and Suffolk counties.
