PETER WALDNER ILLUSTRATION | One of Peter Waldner’s front page illustrations, which graced the March 22, 2015  isssue for the Reporter,  was awarded a prize by the New York Press Association last weekend.

The New York Press Association (NYPA) honored your hometown newspaper this past weekend with eight awards for editorial excellence.

The association’s “2015 Better Newspaper Contest” fielded nearly 3,000 entries from 177 newspapers across the state with circulations ranging from large to small and were judged by the Washington State Press Association. The prizes were awarded at NYPA’s spring conference, April 9-10, in Saratoga Springs. (more…)

In a season of commencement speeches and advice to graduates, I was reminded of an old newspaper column called “Nobody asked me, but …” So here are some lessons, learned from a master teacher.

As you prepare to graduate, you are likely filled with conflicting feelings of fear about the unknown and confidence about your readiness for new challenges. Given the quality of the education you’ve received at Shelter Island School, you will be carrying with you the basic tools to succeed, but you haven’t been taught all you will need. (more…)
