Vigorous exercise is a good excuse for eating well, so the Shelter Island 10K is a highlight of my summer. My husband started training for and running the 10K in 1992. At the time, I was pregnant with our second child, and my spouse and I were gaining weight at about the same rate. Twenty-five years later, he is still running, this year alongside the son I gave birth to back then.

The 38th annual Shelter Island 10K/5K Run/Walk is Saturday, June 17 at 5:30 p.m. After the race, head to Island Boat Yard for the annual Runners Festival from 7 to 10 p.m. featuring food trucks, beer and wine, dancing with DJ Twilo, kids fun area with bounce houses, games and crafts, raffle prizes, a silent auction, and more. Melissa Mundy splits her time these days between a shared house on Shelter Island and an apartment in New York City or, as she puts it, ‘on the other side of the ferry.’
In a family with a lot to be proud of, Melissa Mundy is holding up her end of things.
Just 26 years old, she’s already done more volunteer work, master-minded more charity events and raised more support for worthy causes than most of us will in a lifetime. (more…)
