As 2017 comes to an end, three major events stand out this pastyear in Suffolk County: the election results of last month, the indictment of long-time Suffolk District Attorney Tom Spota and the beginnings of offshore wind development.
It was an important election here for women and a breakthrough for African-Americans with Errol Toulon, Jr. elected as sheriff, becoming the first black to win a (non-judicial) countywide post. (more…)

The astonishing win of the U.S. presidency by Donald Trump on the Republican ticket has, to put it mildly, overshadowed all other political news out of the 2016 election.
In Suffolk County, which Mr. Trump carried with 52 percent of the vote, a percentage-point more than Democrat Barack Obama did in 2012, there was a variety of less astonishing but still interesting results. Foremost was the, not unrelated, first re-election victory of Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley). (more…)
