Michael Payano will graduate from Shelter Island High School in a few weeks, and plans to attend SUNY New Paltz in the fall, the first in his family to attend college.

When his clan gathers at the Southold Legion to recognize his achievements, it should be a great party. With one side of the family first-generation immigrants from the Dominican Republic, and the other potato and hay farmers with deep roots on the East End, it will be a bilingual, multicultural celebration. It’s hard to believe, but spring temperatures finally decided to show up at the Shelter Island spring track teams’ last track and field invitational. In what has been a rarity this spring, sunny skies actually accompanied the warm temperatures. Both the varsity boys and girls teams traveled to East Hampton High School to compete in the East End Classic on Saturday, May 11. (more…)
