Eggcited kids hunted for 1,428 eggs on Easter Sunday.

The annual Easter egg hunt returned to the Island on Easter Sunday at 1 p.m. sharp after getting rained out Saturday. The Shelter Island Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary welcomed kids up to age 8 to hunt for eggs at Fireman’s Field, located on the corner of Cartwright and Burns roads.

After the news story I wrote last week about the Deer and Tick Committee’s vote to reject the idea of burning on public lands to control ticks appeared, many responded remembering the good old days “when we burned and there did not seem to be as many ticks as there are now.”

SHELTER ISLAND SCHOOL PHOTOS
Island pre-K students ventured around the Island in early March.

In mid March pre-kindergarten students went on two walking field trips. They walked to Dr. Kestler’s dental office where they learned all about teeth and the equipment in a dentist’s office.

The Shelter Island Seed Library sprang to life for its fourth season last week with a presentation by farmer and educator Scott Chaskey and Layton Guenther, farm manager at Amagansett’s Quail Hill Farm about the work they do and the importance of saving and sharing heirloom seeds. It’s a joint project of the Shelter Island Library (SIL)and Sylvester Manor Educational Farm and the brainchild of reference librarian Jocelyn Ozolins and Maggie Higby, formerly of Sylvester Manor.
