A campaign has been underway by Supervisor Gary Gerth to assist owners of properties along Route 114 in sprucing up the Island’s main thoroughfare, which has some boarded-up stores and businesses that are operational but less than attractive. (more…)

One of Craig Wood’s first jobs stands out among his childhood memories, and not in a good way.

“I did not like manure day,” he said, referring to the task of cleaning out the barn on his family’s upstate farm. The fact that manure day was a particular day — meaning they only shoveled when the pile reached a tipping-point — made the task even more memorable. (more…)

Don Dunning is a man who enjoys telling a story on himself. Like the time he walked into Fedi’s shortly after finding out he had been elected to the board of the Shelter Island Public Library, and ran into Mimi Brennan, the Dorothy Parker of the Island.

Mimi congratulated him. “I said I was kind of shocked because I don’t even read that much,” Don said, and Mimi cracked, “I was shocked too, because I didn’t think you could read.” (more…)

The mystery of what’s going on at Schmidt’s was aired at Town Hall Tuesday with some new information added to the puzzle. Supervisor Jim Dougherty said at the Town Board work session that Schmidt’s has until April 15 to upgrade its septic system before some action is taken. (more…)
