The Reporter has used this space several times in the past to commend Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) for his efforts to ensure that certain East End concerns — helicopters, clean water, preserving Plum Island — are heard in Washington.
Although praising a congressman for taking care of constituent services is like congratulating an employee for punctuality, many representatives only begin to listen to their district when elections are closing in.
But our voice in the House of Representatives also has to speak about critical issues facing the country, and to make a stand to protect and defend the Constitution when it faces dangers. One of those dangers is the possibility that Donald Trump would become president and commander-in-chief. (more…)

Taking a stand
Freshman Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) has had a good week.
We’ll hold our fire — for now — about his joining forces with reactionary U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas spouting conspiracy theories about American foreign policy. But we commend him for supporting local educators fighting the Common Core system by introducing legislation and also for standing with opponents of ear-splitting helicopter traffic over the Island. Appearing on Fox News two days before being sworn in, the freshman Congressman from Shirley was asked about a speech that current House majority whip Steve Scalise had given years earlier to a group of white supremacists in Louisiana, while he was serving in that state’s House of Representatives.
