Greenport Village was one of hundreds of locations across the country Saturday where rallies were held to denounce the separation of migrant children from their families and to demand they be reunited.
It was all part of a #FamiliesBelongTogether day of action, with rallies in major cities such as New York and Washington D.C., but also in other towns around Long Island such as Huntington Station, Westbury and Rockville Centre. (more…)
On Shelter Island there has long been a dependence on immigrant labor employed by landscapers, contractors, retail businesses and restaurants, and working in private homes.
Some entered illegally, others came to the United States on temporary work visas for a season but stayed to make a life here for themselves and their families. Some have children born here who are American citizens, and others were brought as small children and have never known a life in their parents’ home countries. (more…)
