In 1652, an Englishman named Nathaniel Sylvester sailed with his wife Grizzell from his family’s sugar plantation in Barbados and landed on Shelter Island. He, along with his brother and two other investors, had purchased the Island from an English aristocrat to create an 8,000-acre estate as a “provisioning plantation,” servicing the sugar plantations of the West Indies.

Sylvester Manor is accepting applications for the 2019 farm season for both full-season farm apprentices and long-term opportunities for those from World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF).
Apprentices will gain experience in all aspects of vegetable production, including working with over 100 hens in a laying operation. Other livestock opportunities are possible based on interest and experience level.

Breaking bread may bring people together, but baking bread seems to intimidate many home chefs.
At least, that’s the response I get from others when I make this bread. Everyone always appears stunned that I whipped up a loaf of French bread so easily and that it’s so good. But it actually is really easy, just five ingredients and five easy steps, and voila! You’ve got a delicious loaf of bread that will impress and satisfy dinner party guests or that friend coming by for a glass of wine.

Basil uplifts my spirit like no other plant in the garden. Just the smell of it elevates my mood, awakens my senses and gets me motivated. Valued as an important culinary herb, basil holds even more uses in any herbal medicine cabinet. (more…)

Shortly after my arrival on the Island, I learned two important things: Food is very expensive and everybody is concerned about the levels of fresh water. Since I am a farmer, it seems that more folks should grow food and how they grow it needs to use as little of the Island’s freshwater resources as possible. (more…)
