Support for affordable housing in our community is growing. At the same time, a counter-current for conversion of rentable residences to lucrative short term rentals (STR) is underway. This is difficult to reconcile. (more…)

Once again, Islanders showed their true spirit of cooperation Thursday, donating 48 pints of blood during the drive that took place at EMT Headquarters.
We’ve quoted Margaret Mead, the American author and anthropologist, in this space at this time of year before, but her words bear repeating: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” (more…)

The Shelter Island Lions Club 2016 Citizen of the Year is Phil Power. On Thursday, May 26 at 6 p.m., Mr. Power will be presented with the award during a gala dinner at the Pridwin Hotel. Tickets for the dinner are $42 (cash bar) and go on sale April 28 at the Shelter Island Library. (more…)
