Elected leaders say they aren’t giving up their fight against helicopter noise despite the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) decision last month to reject a petition by Southold Town requesting that the controversial North Shore route be reconsidered.

Southold argues in its petition that the FAA did not give the town its right of notice and opportunity to be heard before extending the route to August 6, 2020 and requested it mandate a South Shore route for flights to and from the South Fork. (more…)

A Needham’s Skimmer is a rare type of drafgonfly that can be found on Plum Island in the wetlands area.

The existing natural habitat has been the factor most often cited in the fight against a sale of federally-owned Plum Island.

But the specific types of wildlife and plants that thrive on the island have never been fully documented. With that in mind, researchers from the New York Natural Heritage Program (NYNHP) spent the last year recording all the living species on the island, where the existing federal animal disease research center is expected to close in the coming years. A Federal Aviation Administration official recently told a group of East End leaders that a decision to approve a four-year extension of the current  North Shore helicopter route was done as a result of political pressure from U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), according to Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley).
