Thanksgiving is in the air, a signal that the sports seasons are changing.
At the high school level, the girls and boys basketball teams are hitting the hardwood, while the cheerleaders are starting to think about their new routines. Winter track for boys and girls is a new offering this year. At the junior high level the boys are playing basketball, and the girls are serving up volleyballs. (more…)
When I was a young boy I played Little League baseball.
In my last year of playing, I was 12 years old. My position was either pitcher or third basemen for the Long Branch Badgers in New Jersey. My coach was Patrick Hughes, a 19-year-old kid but to a 12-year-old he seemed like he was 50. I now reminisce how he adored us and became a real friend and supporter of all the boys on the team. The Shelter Island girls JV softball team has started with a bang, outscoring their opponents by a combined total of 43-9 in the first two games. The season opener at the Knox School’s home field on April 13 was a 17-4 resounding win, and the next day the Stony Brook Bears headed to the ferry after a 26-5 defeat. (more…)

In the bank last week I ran into young Ron Jernick, town worker who helps keep the Island beautiful. Our discussion caught my full interest when he told me what his mom and dad were doing in Florida. Even though his parents moved away from the Island over 25 years ago, I did remember Ron Sr. but knew nothing about what he was doing or why he had moved to Florida. (more…)
