Late last month, on one of the hottest days this summer, Shelter Islander Joe Denny decided to take a 125-mile hike.

Discussing the idea with his wife, Julie, Mr. Denny said she was supportive. “She married a guy who does crazy things,” he said. (more…)

There were no surprises with the most recent gauging of water levels in Shelter Island’s test wells.

That’s according to Ken Pysher, who compiles United States Geological Survey information for the town’s Water Advisory Committee. Nine test wells are up and four are down for the period June 18 to July 16. (more…)

Two poets, Islander Virginia Walker and Michael Walsh of Rocky Point, will read from their book, “Neuron Mirror,” at Friday Night Dialogues at the Library on March 20 at 7 p.m.

The book is dedicated to the memory of people who died from pancreatic cancer: Ms. Walker’s mother, Helen Shields, and four poets known to the authors — Diana Chang, Robert Long, Siv Cedering and Antje Katcher. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Lustgarten Foundation, an organization that promotes pancreatic cancer research. (more…)
