On Saturday afternoon, the Shelter Island School boys varsity basketball team defeated the Pierson Whalers 70-62 before a spirited home crowd at Shelter Island School.

Dan Martin scored 24 points and Lucas Quigley-Dunning made five 3-pointers as the Indians withstood a dramatic second-half comeback by the Whalers to notch their first victory of the young season.

“It was a gutsy performance,” Coach Jay Card Jr. said after the game. “We let them back into the game in the third quarter, but we didn’t fold.” (more…)

I remember the day I became a registered organ donor. I was 23 years old and a few months removed from leaving the State of New York for sunny Southern California.

It was the day I received my new driver’s license, which so conveniently lists your weight in California, as if regular ol’ folks like myself who’d moved to Hollywood needed any added incentive to feel like outcasts. The license also featured a circle for organ donation, on which residents who chose to opt-in to that state’s registry placed a bright pink sticker. (more…)

Three Shelter Island girls, Kelly Colligan, Kenna McCarthy and Margaret Michalak have all distinguished themselves at the high school varsity level, earning All-League, All-Conference and All-Tournament honors. But the last couple of years they’ve proved they can also play with the ‘big” girls at the more competitive Club Volleyball. This level of competition is where the best players from area schools join together to form All-Star teams to play in large regional tournaments. (more…)
