Water Authority approvals for structure: Funding for police body cameras

The Town Board Monday night approved the site plan submitted by the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) to allow construction of a small structure to contain equipment for treating PFAs, known as “forever chemicals,” which come from some household products and pose health risks from drinking water contaminated by them.

SCWA manages the West Neck Water District and recognized the need to install a granular activated carbon or resin treatment system, replacing a hydronumatic tank — a storage tank designed to store water and air under pressure — with associated drainage structures on a site at 378 North Menantic Road.

When the application was submitted, two neighbors expressed concerns. One was concerned about potential noise and the view from her house; an agreement was reached with SCWA to use vegetation in front of the house to buffer noise and improve the view from her house. 

A second neighbor complained SCWA vehicles were being parked partially on his land and an adjustment was made to move parking to a nearby area.

Davy Resigns From WAC

Sean Davy, one of the newest members of the Water Advisory Committee, has tendered his resignation in a letter read into the record at Monday night’s Town Board meeting. Details were not available about his decision. He has had some differences of opinion with the committee, wanting to be more aggressive with actions about some issues, but the Reporter awaits a response from him about what motivated his decision to leave the committee.

Police Body Worn Cameras

The Town approved a resolution authorizing submission of a Services Law Enforcement Technology grant from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice for up to $125,000 to implement a Police Department body worn camera program. The grant would also include in-vehicle camera systems and associated equipment, software, data storage, installation and training.

There would be no Town matching funds needed.

Senior Services Vehicle

Thanks to a $25,000 contribution from the Shelter Island Lions Club and the Senior Citizens Foundation, Senior Services will get a new car this year.

Netflix Film

The Town Board agreed to issue a permit to Netflix for an 11-day filming of scenes for a movie, “Women Like Us,” starring Whoopi Goldberg, Vivica A. Fox, Vanessa Williams and Jenifer Lewis. The shoot is to include filming of The Pridwin, Sunset Beach Hotel, and Crescent Beach starting on Sept. 25 for a planned 11 days. The fee the company must pay is $55,000, some of which could be refunded if there is less need than anticipated for Town services or higher than stated if there is a need for more Town services to coordinate the area for traffic.
