Shelter Island Police Department blotter: Sept. 9, 2026

Those named in arrest reports or receiving police summonses have not been convicted of a crime. In court, the charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn or the defendants may be found not guilty.

SUMMONSES

Aandrea Carter of Shelter Island was issued a summons for amplified sound exceeding the permissible limit on Aug. 29.

Henry J. Lackner of Montauk was issued tickets on Aug. 28 for operating without insurance and while registration was suspended or revoked, on South Ferry Road.

Chelsea M. Harms of New York City was ticketed on Aug. 28 on St. Mary’s Road for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Walter F. Ruales of Shirley was ticketed on Aug. 31 on South Ferry Road for unlicensed operation.

Andrew Eklund of Shelter Island was ticketed on Sept. 1 on North Ferry Road for inadequate or no stop lamps.

Alen Ildatov of Brooklyn was issued a summons on Sept. 1 for failure to yield when entering the roadway on North Ferry Road.

24 parking tickets were issued last week.

ACCIDENTS

On Aug. 24, Robert Agoglia of Sag Harbor was driving southbound on Manhanset Road when he attempted to overtake an uninvolved vehicle by passing on the left. In doing so, he struck a car traveling northbound, driven by Thomas M. Cronin of Shelter Island, causing damage to both vehicles. The second driver and his passenger sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment.  

On Aug. 29, Dennis M. Clark of Shelter Island reported to police that he’d hit the stop sign at Daniel Lord Road while making a right-hand turn onto North Menantic Road. Damage to his vehicle was less than $1,000. Shelter Island Highway Department was notified to replace the sign. 

MARINE INCIDENTS

A South Ferry employee requested information on Sept. 1 on establishing a no-wake zone. Documenting incidents was recommended, as well as consulting Waterways Management Advisory Council and Southampton Police since the waterway is a multi-jurisdictional area.

After observing a 30-foot vessel aground near the Island Boat Yard fuel dock on Aug. 29, an officer contacted Sea Tow but was unable to get owner information due to the depth of water. Shellfish permits were checked in Westmoreland on the 29th. Environmental Conservation Law checks were conducted on Aug. 30 at Hiberry Lane in Hay Beach; no violations were observed.

OTHER REPORTS 

On Aug. 25, assistance was requested of the Shelter Island Police Department by the FBI in locating persons of interest to serve a subpoena. SIPD was asked to assist NY State Police with a confidential investigation on Aug. 31.

On Aug. 28, an anonymous caller complained that a nude male was on the beach at Hay Beach. An officer responded and found no nudists on the scene. Responding to a complaint of 20 sports cars with loud exhausts speeding in Dering Harbor on Aug. 30, an officer observed the cars but found no violations. Ammunition found in the attic of a Westmoreland residence was turned in for destruction on Sept. 1.

Officers responded to a domestic dispute on Sept. 1. Distracted driving enforcement was conducted in the Center on Aug. 29; radar enforcement in Menantic on Aug. 31. 

In other reports: police provided lift assists; conducted welfare checks; responded to accidental 911 calls; received reports from a complainant wishing to document incidents she believed were harassing.

ANIMAL INCIDENTS

A bat was evicted from a Westmoreland house by the Animal Control Officer on Aug. 31. A tern (a threatened species) on a West Neck Beach, unable to walk or

fly was taken by the ACO to the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on the 31st. The ACO assisted with searches for several dogs at large.

ALARMS

The Shelter Island Fire Department responded to a smoke alarm in a West Neck lobby on Aug. 28. Chief Max Pelletier determined it was a false alarm. A carbon monoxide alarm was activated in the Center on Sept. 2 by a faulty sensor. SIFD confirmed a false alarm. Chief Pelletier confirmed no emergency after a fire alarm was activated in Westmoreland on Sept. 3.

AIDED CASES

Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services and Stony Brook Paramedic responded to aided cases on Aug. 28, 30, 31 (2), Sept. 1, 2, and 3 (2). Five persons were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Three persons refused medical treatment.
