The 3-mile marker of the 36th annual Shelter Island 10K Run was a lot more than just a milestone, much more than a sigh of relief as I approached the halfway mark.

The white picket fence and green grass of the golf course, the rush of the race and the thud of sneakers on concrete were all familiar. For years I stood by that fence, handing out high-fives and words of encouragement to the racers, but I was always waiting for one person — my dad, John Quinn. (more…)

August means many things, including air conditioning units cranking, guzzling electricity and dollars. It’s a trade most are willing to make to stay cool.

But there’s at least one homeowner on Shelter Island who has saved both power and pennies — that mount up fast — this summer without sacrificing the comfort of a well air-conditioned home. (more…)

Many properties on the Island welcome a form of privacy from thick vegetation at the edges of property lines.

Unfortunately, this naturally occurring screening is often made up of invasive species that have taken over many parts of the Island. (more…)

From the families scattered across the Pridwin lawn for the annual fireworks barbeque, to the young people who stake out their spot in front of Sunset Beach in the morning, nothing fills the half-mile stretch of Crescent Beach like the Shelter Island fireworks. (more…)
