Shelter Island student Jen C. is attending Animal Science classes at ESBOCES and is hosting a drive for the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton. Here’s a list of items that they need. All donations can be dropped off in the school lobby until Nov. 26.

At this time of year, I determinedly avert my eyes from the growing collections of orange orbs beckoning from nearby farms. Just days into October, I’m not ready to surrender to the call of the pumpkin.

Now that Halloween is over, it seems like the focus is on Christmas. It’s as though Thanksgiving might be forgotten.

On Sunday I took the grandkids to see the new movie “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch.” A pleasant version of the classic, but I must admit I slept through most of  it. I suppose it’s designed to put the viewer in the Christmas spirit but to me it just feels too early for that.

As director of animal training at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, Candyce Paparo’s responsibilities extend far beyond playing with monkeys and sea lions.
