Although I did not pull a 10-hour shift waiting tables even once, or mow and trim overgrown lawns all day, all summer, I’m still ready to raise a glass to the end of the season. It’s called a Shelter Island Sunset, so called because Terry Lucas (library director and gifted cocktail-namer) commented via Facebook that it reminded her of the gorgeous sunsets Shelter Island has enjoyed this summer.

I have learned that there is no hiding when Mother Nature has something for you to experience. There are moments to witness and lessons to learn within each and every season. If you are willing to be present, you will find that nature is full of surprises.
I have been quietly working in my garden, the May morning is warm and clear. Birds are singing, and the essence of spring is awake with every flower unfolding. (more…)

The Shelter Island Association (SIA) presented a survey Tuesday to the Town Board on short term-rentals it conducted this month.
One of the most revealing statistics from the survey, which employed the online tool survey monkey.com, is that 63 percent of those responding believe unregulated short-term rentals are not beneficial for Shelter Island. About 20 percent said lack of regulations was a good thing and 18 percent were neutral on the issue. (more…)
