A quiet Crescent Beach one late afternoon this week.

Last Wednesday, two women paused on their evening walk, and leaned on the whitewashed fence that runs along Crescent Beach to admire the sunset. “I haven’t been down here all summer,” said one. They were there for some quiet enjoyment. (more…)

Aterahme Lawrence at The Islander.

Growing up in Greenport and Shelter Island, Aterahme Lawrence dreamed of beauty pageants, acting and singing, but had little reason to think those dreams could come true. Maybe it’s something in the air — it definitely was early in the week when it was cool and sunny — or maybe it’s in the way kids seem to be walking a bit more slowly, lost in thoughts. Or maybe it’s just imagination taking over, willing a change of season, even though the calendar says summer will be around for another month. (more…)

When I ask people to name the best day of the year on Shelter Island, most of them don’t miss a beat. It’s the Tuesday after Labor Day.

Upon reflection, some say they’d trade in Tumbleweed Tuesday for a perfect fall day a little later in the season. (more…)
