Pierce Senken is on an adventure of a lifetime. A 3rd Year Midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, Pierce is the son of Gregory and Jane Senken of Shelter Island and Garden City.

The Obama administration’s recent move opening up a vast area of the Atlantic Ocean to our south to oil and gas drilling comes at a curious time.

Right now there’s so much of the stuff being produced in the U.S. that the industry can’t find places to store it. Add to that the fact that gasoline is at the lowest price in years, and the initiative comes despite the impacts along the Gulf of Mexico, still being felt from the massive 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Recently we switched cell phone carriers, dropping T-Mobile when my son, away at college in Richmond, Virginia, lost any semblance of service, despite standing on his head and turning somersaults.

There was one spot on campus, next to the school’s lake — yes, they have their own lake — where occasionally if the moon was in retrograde, he could text us. (more…)
