Those named in arrest reports or receiving police summonses have not been convicted of a crime. In court, the charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn or the defendants may be found not guilty.
ARREST
Michael Wayne McCallister, 57, of Delray Beach Fla. was arrested on July 19, 2026, at 4:55 p.m., and charged with driving while intoxicated 1st offense, failure to keep right, and having an open container of alcohol and cannabis in a motor vehicle on a highway. Mr. McCallister was held overnight pending arraignment and later appeared before the Shelter Island Justice Court, where he was released on his own recognizance and directed to return on a future court date. The defendant’s vehicle was seized in accordance with applicable Suffolk County DWI Seizure Law.
SUMMONSES
Emir Berenaliev of Shelter Island was ticketed on North Ferry Road for cellphone use while driving on July 10.
Miles B. Bakal of New York City received a summons on North Ferry Road on July 10 for operating an uninspected moped without a helmet.
Fisher M. Bakal of New York City was ticketed on North Ferry Road on July 10 for speed not reasonable and prudent.
Ellen B. Lowery Pike of Jacksonville, Fla. received a summons on July 11 for inadequate or no stop lamps on South Ferry Road.
Joseph Frie of Smithtown was ticketed on July 11 for having a child under 12 without a personal flotation device in a vessel off Crescent Beach.
Murat K. Duman of New York City was ticketed on July 15 for failure to stop at a stop sign on New York Avenue.
Tyler S. Kelly of Kodiak, Alaska was ticketed on July 11 for towing persons without an observer in a vessel off Crescent Beach.
Michel M. Saltzman of Brooklyn was ticketed on July 12 for an unregistered motor boat in Dickerson Creek.
William Cohen of Westport, Conn. received a summons for operating a vessel near bathers off Crescent Beach on July 14.
Alexander R. Rossi of East Hampton was ticketed on July 12 for operating a motor vessel at speed greater than 5 mph within 100 feet of an anchored vessel off Crescent Beach.
On July 12, Alec E. Walker of East Hampton received a summons for having no boater’s education safety certificate abourd a vessel in West Neck Harbor.
Eleven parking tickets were issued last week.
ACCIDENTS
On July 10, Alexis A. Heaney of Shelter Island was backing up on Bowditch Road when her vehicle struck a parked car belonging to John Goodleaf of Queens, causing over $1,000 in damage to the parked vehicle.
On July 12, Alejandro Bermudez of Shelter Island was backing up when his vehicle struck the car behind his, owned by M.E. Soriano Torres of Greenport. Damage was under $1,000 from the accident, which occurred at Sunset Beach.
Anna Werther of Brooklyn told police she was making a left turn into Piccozzi’s parking lot on July 13 when her e-bike overturned. She refused medical treatment at the scene.
MARINE INCIDENTS
A complainant on July 10 reported someone had moved his moored vessel in the previous 24 hours. A vessel nearly sunk at a South Ferry Hills dock was reported on July 10; the owner was notified. Shelter Island police vessels joined with other local, county and state vessels to provide a security zone for the fireworks barge on July 11. Marine training on all vessels was completed on July 11. On July 14, a harbormaster advised the captain of a 70-foot Viking princess in West Neck Harbor of
the anchoring codes and provided a Shelter Island Boaters Guide; the captain decided to leave the area.
OTHER REPORTS
A confidential investigation was opened on July 10. Police responded to a domestic dispute on July 10. Radar enforcement was performed on St. Mary’s Road on July 14 with one warning issued. Distracted driving enforcement was conducted in the Center on July 16; radar enforcement in the Center on July 15.
A golf ball cracking a windshield was reported by a driver on West Neck Road on July 10. A Heights caller reported a woman entered his Heights residence without permission on July 11. Shelter Island Police, along with state and county officers, provided security for the fireworks event on July 11.
A person clamming in an area closed to shellfishing was advised to put the clams back and that Gardiners Chase and Dering Harbor were closed areas. A person reported on July 16 sleeping on the side of the road on Ram Island stated that he was resting before returning to Greenport. Officers escorted him to the North Ferry. In other reports, a funeral escort was provided; officers responded to fallen trees and notified the highway department; dealt with noise complaints; provided lift assists; and responded to accidental 911 calls.
ANIMAL INCIDENTS
The Animal Control Officer climbed into a trash compactor at the recycling center on July 16 to retrieve a herring gull that had gotten stuck. The ACO rescued an injured dove from a second-floor balcony on July 10. A kitten found trying to get into cars in a West Neck parking lot was retrieved and will be cared for by the ACO until a home can be found. A finch unable to stand was retrieved on Ram Island by the ACO who will care for it. The ACO assisted with searches for several dogs at large and responded to reports of dogs on beaches.
ALARMS
A smoke alarm was activated on July 10 in Dering Harbor, reported by a chef to be caused by cooking; the Shelter Island Fire Department confirmed. A smoke alarm activation in the Heights on July11 was deemed a false alarm after an investigation by SIFD. Smoke in the dining room of a Center restaurant was investigated on July 12; the cause was cooking, an employee said, and SIFD confirmed. A fire alarm activation on Ram Island on July 12 was reported by the owner to be a false alarm. SIFD and 1st Assistant Chief J.C. Chavez responded to a fire alarm in Menantic on July 12 and determined no emergency. A smoke alarm activation in a West Neck hotel was investigated by police and SIFD on July 13; it was caused by shower steam. A CO alarm was reported in the Center on July 13; the owner said she was unable to turn it off since the day before. SIFD and 1st Asst. Chief Chavez were on the scene and determined no emergency. An employee lit the stove at a West Neck restaurant on July 14, setting off a fire alarm. Police and Shelter Island Fire Department responded; 1st Asst. Chief Chavez was on the scene and determined that the system needed to be serviced. A residential fire alarm activation in Menantic was investigated by police and SIFD, with no emergency found. Police and SIFD responded to a CO alarm in a garage in the Center on July 15. A smoke alarm in a Heights hotel was activated by shower steam on July 16.
AIDED CASES
Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services and Stony Brook Paramedic responded to cases on July 10 (2), 12(4), 13 (2), 14 (2), and 16.
Eight persons were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for further treatment. One person was transported to Stony Brook Hospital for evaluation.
One person was transported to Southampton Hospital for further evaluation. One person refused medical treatment.
