Shelter Island Police Department blotter: July 30, 2026

Those named in arrest reports or receiving police summonses have not been convicted of a crime. In court, the charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn or the defendants may be found not guilty.

TRAFFIC SUMMONSES

Charles Murray of Shelter Island received a summons on July 17 on North Midway Road for having insufficient tail lamps.

Fannie Quigley of Shelter Island was ticketed on July 17 on North Ferry Road for failure to yield right-of-way at an intersection. 

Mark Harris of Mill Valley, Calif. was issued a summons on July 17 on South Ferry Road for an uninspected motor vehicle.

Harrison A. Weslek of Shelter Island was ticketed on July 17 on North Cartwright Road for operating out of class.

Phillip Millspaugh of Shelter Island was ticketed on July 18 on East Thomas Street for an unregistered motor vehicle.

Elida Ardon Esquite of Greenport was ticketed on July 20 for unlicensed operation and failure to yield right of way at an intersection on North Ferry Road.

Jeanne McCulloch of Brooklyn was isssued a summons on New York Avenue on July 21 for speeding, 44 mph in a 25-mph zone. 

On July 21, Jordana Shapiro of Boca Raton, Fla. was ticketed for failure to stop at a stop sign on West Neck Road. 

On July 23, Edwin Arias Roldan of Greenport was ticketed on South Ferry Road for operating in violation of restrictions

On July 23, Jay Litvack of New York City was ticketed on West Neck Road for failure to stop at a stop sign.

18 parking tickets were issued.

MARINE TICKETS

Cornelius Kieybergen of Sag Harbor was ticketed on July 19 for imprudent speed in West Neck Harbor.

Orande Pitt of Hampton Bays received a summons on July 19 for imprudent speed and causing a wake in North Ferry Channel.

Bladimir Ortega of Central Islip was ticketed on July 19 for porgies less than specified off Quinipet Beach.

Jose J. Lopez of Brentwood received a summons on July 19 for possessing 35 porgies, in excess of the bag limit.

Felix Batres of Ridgefield, N.J. was ticketed on July 18 for having porgies less that the specified size off Reel Point.

Colman S. Gould of Rumson, N.J. received a ticket on July 4 for operating a motor vessel while intoxicated (first offense), in West Neck Creek.

ACCIDENTS

On July 17, Fannie Quigley of Shelter Island told police she was stopped at a stop sign on East Thomas Street and did not observe a vehicle driven by Thomas Hundgen of Shelter Island prior to proceeding westbound through the intersection with North Ferry Road. When she failed to yield the right of way, both vehicles sustained damage over $1,000 in a collision.

On July 18, Daniel Hernandez Rivera was driving northbound on North Ferry Road when his vehicle failed to negotiate the turn and lost control, in part due to slippery road conditions, causing the car to spin and strike a small bush and telephone pole. He was transported by SIEMS to Eastern Long Island Hospital for further medical evaluation. The vehicle sustained over $1,000 damage and was towed. 

On July 22, Alexandra Jane Bratty told police while traveling southbound on North Menantic Road, her vehicle was struck by a deer that ran onto the roadway. Damage was under $1,000. The deer was dispatched.

MARINE INCIDENTS

A boat sinking at a Westmoreland dock was reported on July 19. A caretaker was notified and would contact owner. A large vessel improperly anchored partially in a swim area was relocated out of the area on July 23.

OTHER REPORTS

Two juveniles were issued appearance tickets for underage possession of alcohol on July 18. A confidential investigation was opened on July 20.

Police responded to hazardous conditions caused by flooding and downed tree limbs. Distracted driving enforcement was conducted in the Center on July 19; radar enforcement in Menantic on July 21. Radar and distracted driving enforcement were conducted on July 23 on West Neck, North Ferry and St. Mary’s Roads.

In other reports, officers completed court duty; provided lift assists; and responded to noise complaints.  

ANIMAL INCIDENTS

The Animal Control Officer took a baby bunny and a chick home to care for and release. A raccoon appearing distressed was taken for wildlife rehabilitation. The owner of a dog reported to have killed two chickens agreed to provide restitution to the chickens’ owner. A crow stuck in a Westmoreland chimney was freed by the ACO on July 23. TheACO assisted with several searched for dogs at large.

ALARMS

A fire alarm was activated in West Neck on July 19. Police and Shelter Island Fire Department responded. Chief Max Pelletier was on the scene and confirmed there was no problem.

A kitchen smoke alarm was activated in the Heights on July 20. Police and SIFD responded and 2nd Assistant Chief P.J. Lechmanski determined it was a false alarm. A CO alarm activation in the Center on July 20 was deemed false by 1st Assistant Chief J.C. Chavez and 2nd Assistant Chief P.J. Lechmanski on the scene. Police and SIFD responded to a smoke alarm in Dering Harbor that date; no emergency was found.

A CO alarm in the Center on July 21 was deemed a malfunction after SIPD and SIFD responded. A faulty smoke detector was deemed to be the cause of an alarm in Montclair on July 23 after SIFD and SIPD canvassed the area.

AIDED CASES

SIEMS and Stony Brook Paramedic responded to aided cases on July 17, 19, 20 (5), 21 (3), 22, and 23. Nine persons were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital. Three persons declined medical treatment.
