Happening at the Shelter Island Library this month
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Roofing and duct work are being completed, interior insulation is being installed, as is the exterior trim. And the very talented stone masons are hard at work on the beautiful outdoor planters. Stop by and see about getting an after-hours “hard hat tour” from Library Director Terry Lucas or a board member.
In “The Little Trailer That Could,” the library’s temporary home, the month of August is filled with programs, lectures, crafts, activities and money-saving resources. And if you’re entertaining house guests (and who isn’t) don’t forget to check out the discount tickets and museum passes for five East End attractions.
AUDLT PROGRAMS
On Friday, Aug. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m., writer Tom Junod and Grammy-winning artist Loudon Wainwright will be chatting with New Yorker editor Susan Morrison for a unique evening of storytelling and song. The event will be held at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club and tickets are available at the library or at siplspecialevening.eventbrite.com
The ever-popular Library Tennis Tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug. 15 (rain date, Aug. 16) on the beautiful Har-Tru courts at the Shelter Island Racquet Club. Put together a team to play, or just come to watch your friends. You can sign up and get more information at the library. Chuck and Linda Kraus are once again organizing this wonderful, long-running tradition that benefits the library.
“The Art of Saving Seeds” is a timely and sustainable program sponsored by the Garden Club and presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension. Come to St. Mary’s on Monday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. and save money for the next growing season by learning when to collect and process seeds and how to label and store.
“Beat the Heat” with a new low/no cook program from the Library Chef on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
The annual tour of Taylor’s Island will take place on Thursday, Aug. 6. Meet at the library at 9:15 a.m., wearing good walking shoes and bringing sunscreen and a picnic lunch. Transportation will be provided. Spots are limited so please register online or in the library. Rain date is Friday, Aug. 7 at 10:15 a.m.
CHILDREN/YOUNG AUDLTS PROGRAMS
In collaboration with the Recreation Department, the ever-popular “Goat on a Boat” puppet show will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 3 p.m. in the Community Center. Appropriate for infants to 8-year olds.
Join the Group for the East End to protect our local beach birds by taking part in an interactive program that teaches us how to safely share the space with these vulnerable creatures. It’s happening at the School auditorium on Thursday, August 4 at 2 p.m. For ages 8 – 12 (ages 8 – 9 must be accompanied by a caregiver).
