The September Sweep: Volunteers welcome for next Saturday’s cleanup

BY DONNA EMMA

The Shelter Island Lions Club is calling on neighbors, friends and families to roll up their sleeves and help keep the Island beautiful at “The September Sweep,” a community-wide cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The morning begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Community Center, where volunteers can gather for welcome coffee and donuts before heading out. The Lions will provide everything needed for the cleanup, including gloves, garbage bags, safety vests and litter pickers.

Then, from 10 a.m. to noon, you choose where to make a difference — a favorite street, beach, neighborhood or other corner of Shelter Island that could use a little attention. Every bottle, can, wrapper and piece of litter collected helps keep the Island the beautiful place we all enjoy.

At the end of the morning, collected litter can be discarded in the Town truck located in the Legion/Community Center parking lot.

The September Sweep is an easy way for Islanders of all ages to spend a couple of hours doing something tangible for the community. Come with friends or family, or simply head out on your own. You choose where to go; the Lions provide the supplies — and the coffee and donuts.

The Lions remind volunteers that safety comes first. When cleaning along roadways, walk facing oncoming traffic and wear the provided safety vest. In busy areas, designate someone to watch for cars.

So pick your favorite corner of Shelter Island and join your neighbors for The September Sweep.
