Shelter Island Police Department blotter: Sept. 16, 2026

Those named in arrest reports or receiving police summonses have not been convicted of a crime. In court, the charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn or the defendants may be found not guilty.

TRAFFIC SUMMONSES

Eleanor Whiteford of Brooklyn was ticketed on Sept. 4 for failure to stop at a stop sign on St. Mary’s Road.

Diana Teshler of New York City was issued a summons for failure to stop at a stop sign on Smith Street on Sept. 5.

A summons was issued to a juvenile on North Midway Road on Sept. 6 for operating an e-bike while not wearing a helmet.

Giovanni DeSantis of New York City was issued a summons on Sept. 6 for failure to stop at a stop sign while riding a bicycle on Ram Island Road.

35 parking tickets were issued last week.

ACCIDENTS

On Sept. 5, Gerardo Sanchez Sanchez of Shelter Island and Henry Haimo reported their vehicles collided while backing out of parking spots at 4 Manwaring Road. Damage exceeded $1,000.

On Sept. 7, a vehicle driven by John M. DeVito Jr. of Mastic Beach was traveling eastbound on Chase Avenue when, attempting to make a left turn onto Cedar Avenue, it struck Benson D. Rubio on a bicycle traveling westbound on Chase. Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services responded and transported the cyclist to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment. Damage exceeded $1,000.

Eliza Weiss of Westport, Conn. told police on Sept. 8 while driving on Midway Road her vehicle struck a fawn, which was found deceased and the Highway Department notified for removal. 

MARINE TICKETS

David Friedman of Sag Harbor was ticketed on Sept. 6 in West Neck Harbor for operating a motor vessel without a safety certificate.

Lorelee Kirby of Coventry, Conn. was issued a summons in Dering Harbor on Sept. 7 for failure to display registration numbers on a motor vessel.

Richard Heffernan of Southold was ticketed on Sept. 7 for not having fire extinguishers on a vessel in Dering Harbor.

Jan C. Van der Burg of Miami, Fla. was issued a summons on Sept. 7 for a child under 12 not wearing a flotation device in Dering Harbor.

MARINE INCIDENTS

Following a report Sept. 9 of a boat accident witnessed at Reel Point, where an occupant was observed thrown from a cabin onto the deck on impact, Sag Harbor Police were asked to locate the vessel and provide information. A warning was issued for a jet ski operating in excess of 5 mph in West Neck Creek on Sept. 5.

OTHER REPORTS

An affidavit of trespass was issued on Sept. 9. An officer responded to a report of a group of males smoking and drinking at Fiske Field after a soccer match. They were advised that no alcoholic beverages were permitted on school property.

In other reports: police responded to noise complaints; provided lift assists; conducted school crossings; performed well-being checks; responded to accidental 911 calls; and submitted administrative reports.

ANIMAL INCIDENTS

The Animal Control Officer removed two bats from a Silver Beach residence and one from a Center residence on Sept. 4; another bat was removed from a Center residence and taken for rabies testing at the homeowner’s request. A snapping turtle was relocated from a yard to a fresh water pond on that date. A possum was removed from a Silver Beach road on Sept. 6. The ACO assisted with searches for several dogs at large.

ALARMS

A loud explosion and smoke were reported on Sept. 10 on Ram Island, as well as a smell of propane. Shelter Island Fire Department responded and observed a blown fuse on a PSEG pole. The gas smell was emanating from a generator, which SIFD advised should be turned off and serviced. 

A bedroom smoke alarm was activated on Sept. 8 in the Center. SIFD responded and was unable to determine the cause of the alarm, subsequently determined to be false. An alarm was activated in West Neck on Sept. 10 by a person vaping in a bathroom. First Asst. Chief J.C. Chavez determined the alarm was appropriate.

AIDED CASES

Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services responded to cases on Sept. 4 (2), 5, 6 (2), 7, (2), 8, 9 (2), and 10. One person was transported via Suffolk County Police Aviation to Stony Brook Hospital for treatment. Eight persons were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for further treatment. One person refused transport; one person refused medical assistance.
