Last week’s photo (see below) of the long-abandoned Inn Between on North Ferry Road drew an amazing response, triggering happy memories for many Islanders.

We asked Angelo Piccozzi, who knows his Island as well as anyone — some would say better — for a brief history. Angelo responded: ‘The Inn Between Restaurant and Bar was originally a private home where the famed bicycle repairman Richard ‘Dicky’ Mawrey was born in 1899. Later on it was called McGayhey’s Hall and was donated to the Our Lady of The Isle where many of the Island’s children studied Catechism classes. Sometime in the late 1970’s the building was sold to Jerry Shields, a local Island painting contractor, and George Schultheis, a local Island businessman. The place was very successful for many years serving up great food, drinks and live music. The partnership eventually dissolved and a few establishments tried their luck but were never successful. It has been derelict for many years now. Danny Calabro is presently the owner.’
Roger McKeon, Ed Hydeman, John Gilligan and Elizabeth McKee emailed with the correct answer as soon as the paper hit the street and PO boxes. York Bergin emailed to say, ‘At one point it was called Lucinda’s Roadhouse … I remember eating at Lucinda’s with my mom, Dona Bergin when I was a kid.’
On Facebook Dave Gurney was right on the money and so was Jill Diepold and Esther Simovich. Dorothy Eason wrote: ‘Can you take it down? It’s a eye saw.’ (Oh, that hurts!)
Chuck Hoffman, Phil Mancine, Marissa Fanelli, Edward Holm, Julie Fanelli, Julia Romanchuck, and Karen Haag all said what fun it was to work at the old place. Art Ogar weighed in on the Inn, noting he had ‘removed many people from the place when I was active security and friends were running the place.’
Mary DiOrio remembers ‘where my girlfriends danced on the bar!’ Others recognized the great Island watering hole, including Tracy Miller Gibbs, Trish O’Brien, Brian Cass, Jim Mitchell, Lesley Koehler Evans — ‘Where we had our rehearsal dinner’ — Tom Speeches, Lou Price, Laura Brownee, Carleen Washington — ‘Used to be a hopping place. Sad it’s in such disrepair’ — Eva Lebowitz Pesantez, Kathryn O’Hagan, Emily Demarchelier — who wrote: ‘A crime scene” — Terry Fokine, Irene Devlin, Patrica Mac, Holly Avona, Paula Edwards Katzenberg, Ida Gustavson, Elizabeth Lind Johnson, Jennifer Sullivan, Christopher Conklyn, Jules KD, Andrew Clark, Charles Magill — ‘Met my first wife there!’ — Karen Wojton, Brian Caputo, Lori Hughes, James Reeves, Steven Austin, William Fast and Suzanna E. Tulino — ‘We had Girl Scout meetings there and I remember a Halloween party.’
