Gerry Siller was in high school when he decided to apply for a job at a new restaurant near home in Massapequa. He’d worked at his father’s deli in Bellmore, so knew how to make a sandwich, and when the hiring manager came out to see if anyone in the around-the-block line of applicants was a short-order cook, Gerry raised his hand. He was hired, and just before his first day on the job, a friend told him the secret of success for any job: “Just have a rag in your hand and always be cleaning things.” (more…)
The Shelter Island political season got off to an early start — eight months before Election Day — with the Shelter Island Democratic Committee announcing its 2019 slate of candidates for supervisor, Town Board members, and highway superintendent. (more…)
AMBROSE CLANCY PHOTO Dickerson Creek, where it begins to flow into an endangered salt marsh. The marsh, on town-owned land off Midway Road, will begin to get an infusion of saltwater from a new culvert.
Because of new Highway Department equipment and the Town Board creating a capital budget plan, work has begun on permanent repairs in some areas where only temporary fixes were affordable in the past. (more…)

High school teacher Peter Miedema brought his senior class in government Tuesday to attend the Town Board’s work session. At the end of the meeting, when residents can address the board on any topic, three students, Julia Labrozzi, Olivia Yeaman and Nicolette Frasco eloquently explained their concerns that in the near future there’s the possibility there will be no place for them on the Island. I was corrected the other day when I was speaking with someone and mentioned that I had to take stuff to the dump. “Oh, don’t you mean the Recycling Center?” I was asked.
I guess that’s the official name now.
I was first introduced to the dump in 1972 as the place to take garbage. You placed all the refuse in plastic bags and brought the garbage to the back of one of the dump trucks parked at the dumping area off Bowditch Road. (more…)
