The paintings of artist Erick O. Segura are currently on view at Griffing & Collins Real Estate/DJTM Enterprises, LLC on Grand Avenue. This is Mr. Segura’s first solo show and the paintings on view were created during a stay in Berlin, Germany in 2016. The public is invited to meet Mr. Segura at an artist reception on Saturday, November 25 from 4 to 6 p.m.

We wish you the very best for the holidays and, oh, here is your town property tax bill — please pay promptly. It’s our annual ritual and you have been very good sports about it. Shelter Island has among the very highest voluntary payment rates by taxpayers, probably the result of a combination of the wonderful, cooperative taxpayer constituents we are fortunate to have, and our (relatively) low taxes. The developer who proposed a community housing project on a 0.31-acre lot in the Center that didn’t pass muster with the Town Board last month, believes no affordable housing proposal will ever be endorsed.
“They will not support it — period,” Janalyn Travis-Messer told the Reporter, referring to any community housing — often called workforce or affordable housing — initiative that reaches the Town Board for approval. In creating the Community Housing Board (CHB) eight years ago, the Town Board just wanted to do something that would sound “warm and fuzzy,” but never intended to allow a project to be developed, she said. “NIMBYism lives.” (more…)
